Rock 'Em Sock 'Em ROBOTS Game

Product Description

A return of a classic! Mattel brings back the classic game from 1996 in which the original battling robots try to knock each other's blocks off! Red Rocker and Blue Bomber battle it out in the arena, with realistic sounds and jaw-jolting action. When a robot lands that blockbuster punch to his opponent's jaw, the victorious robot's head pops up with that Rock 'Em Sock 'Em "gotcha sound." Adult assembly required. Stadium measures 14.5"L x 10"W x 5.5"H.

Editorial Review

Long before TV shows like Battlebots, there were these guys: two plastic boxers battling it out in a ring, tirelessly jabbing at each other in an effort to knock their opponent's block off. Years go by and these fighters (creatively referred to in my house as "the blue one" and "the red one") are still at it, still operated by two players working simple controllers, and still madly punching in an effort to knock loose the other fellow's spring-loaded head. As was traditionally the case, it takes a while to maneuver the robots such that you can even land any punch, let alone a knockout blow. But for intense silly robot fighting, without the hassle of batteries, these guys are still champs. --John Moe

3.0 out of 5 stars The new Rockem Sockem robots..., November 2, 2001

I was disappointed to find that the Rockem Sockem robots I remember so well as a kid had magically shrunk down to pint-sized replacements. I would have been completely satisfied if they had retained thier size, which in turn would have made them retain their original greatness. The lesson here boys...if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Like many baby boomers, I had the original toy myself as a kid. As much as we may like to believe it, the old classic one was not perfect either. It always seemed like one robots head popped off much easier than the other, or the rubberbands came off underneath. Time has tended to make us look back on these toys much more fondly than we did when we actually owned them.

That said, these "new-fangled" versions are extremely poor quality. First of all it just feels flimsy. It certainly is not as durable and heavy as it used to be. Second it seems that one robot is always overly sensitive while the other needs to be hit with a sledgehammer to get the head to pop up. And of course you don't have the trademark, "ZZZZZZZZZZ" sound that the old metal teeth used to make when the head popped up. Our kids must have thought we were nuts to have enjoyed this so much and we have to try and explain how it "used to be better!" The designers who made this should be forced to... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not like we remembered, February 14, 2002

My husband and I were delighted when we saw one this favorite childhood toy back in circulation. We got it for our two sons for Christmas. It took forever to assemble. The Blue guy's head is so sensitive that it pops up when you are only making him punch. So no one wants to be blue. What's the point? And what happened to the signature "scream" when the head pops up? Just a shame that the quality isn't the same.
